In all my years of helping with the Final Cross Over, it is rare that the patient does not have a last burst of energy. This surge could be so subtle that it might be overlooked as mere agitation. It can happen at any hour. Wait for it, recognize and seize this precious moment in time.
- Your loved one may suddenly open their eyes-they may be too weak to speak or too get out of bed.
- Your loved one can also become quite alert. May ask for food or drink. They may even want to get out of bed .They are very weak, so use a two person assist to a safe chair.
In either case throw a party: make this precious moment in time into precious memories. Ask your loved one to tell a special story, bring out photo albums, let them make phone calls, and just be in the moment with them. Record or take pictures of their last celebration.
Your window of opportunity is very limited, so be prepared to put this party together on the fly. There is no set time frame as to how long their energy will last: it could be a few minutes to several hours.
It’s their last hurrah
Their last celebration of their life
Relish the moment and be fully present. This is their gift to you, precious moments.
